About 700 properties on Queensland's Darling Downs remain blacked out on Christmas Eve.

Severe thunderstorms knocked out power in large parts of the region early on Wednesday night, but hundreds of homes at Cecil Plains and Bowenville remain without power on Thursday evening.

Ergon Energy says about 70 crews will work around the clock to try to return power to their customers as soon as possible.

"Crews will work through the night and again on Christmas Day to restore power by repairing the network or by installing generation where possible," Ergon said in a statement.
