78yo quizzed over garage crash carnage

When emergency services responded to reports of a car crash south of Wollongong nothing could have prepared them for the carnage they were to discover.

In a scene reminiscent of a car insurance advertisement, a 78-year-old man and his 4WD appear to have sparked a chain-reaction that left a trail of destruction involving four vehicles, two boats, three trailers and two garages.

NSW Police suspect the elderly man was simply trying to park his Mitsubishi Pajero on Friday night when things went horribly wrong in Albion Park Rail south of Wollongong.

First he accelerated and smashed through the rear brick wall of a garage into a boat on a trailer.

The trailer become lodged in the front of his 4WD before he reversed, colliding with a Toyota Hilux and another boat on a trailer across the road.

This impact caused another garage to collapse on top of the second boat and a nearby camper trailer.

The 78-year-old then accelerated forward again, colliding with another two cars, one of which was impaled by the boat trailer which until then had still been lodged in the man's 4WD.

The Mitsubishi Pajero then ended up 200 metres away from what is now a crime scene.

The elderly driver was taken to Wollongong Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has undergone mandatory blood and urine testing.
