The body of a seven-year-old girl who died of cardiac arrest after being taken into custody by the US Border Patrol has been returned to her homeland.
The coffin containing Jakelin Caal's remains could be seen on pictures as it was taken from the plane after landing in Guatemala to a hearse.
No family members were present when the coffin arrived, Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre reported.
Her family members could not afford the trip to the capital city from her village, according to the newspaper.
On December 6, Jakelin began having seizures while in Border Patrol custody. She was apparently severely dehydrated having not drunk water for days, the Washington Post reported.
The child, who was in custody for eight hours, was found to have a 41- degree-Celsius fever and was taken by helicopter to El Paso hospital in Texas.
She was revived after going into cardiac arrest but did not recover and died at hospital thereafter.
The girl and her father were part of a group of more than 160 illegal migrants who surrendered to authorities in New Mexico, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
