A breakdown of the deluge in northern NSW

What we know so far about the unfolding flood crisis in northern NSW, where some areas have received up to 740mm of rain in 24 hours.

About 20,000 people are subject to immediate evacuation orders on NSW's Far North Coast due to flooding.

RESIDENTS TOLD TO LEAVE

* Tweed Heads South, Tweed Heads West and Tweed Heads (9700 people)

* Lismore CBD, and North and South Lismore (4550 + businesses)

* Chinderah, Kingscliff, Fingal Head and Bilambil (2100)

* Billinudgel, Ocean Shores and New Brighton (1430)

* South Murwillumbah, Condong and Tumbulgum (1140)

* Murwillumbah CBD and East Murwillumbah (750)

* Kyogle (200)

RESCUES

* There have been 102 flood rescues in total in NSW so far, including 60 overnight, with a helicopter sent in Friday morning to assess various areas

* SES fears there may have been deaths, with crews unable to reach some people

* 1400 calls to the SES for help since Wednesday night

RIVERS

* Major flood warnings are current for the Tweed, Wilsons, Richmond, Brunswick rivers and Marshalls Creek

* Tweed River at Murwillumbah peaked at 6.20metres around 4.30am on Friday causing major flooding

* Lismore is flooding, with up to 3m water flows expected through CBD properties on Friday and the NSW SES fearing for the structural integrity of the city's protective levee as water from Wilsons River continues to rise

* A siren sounded in Lismore for the first time in 12 years at 4.15am Friday after water spilled over the 10.6m-high levee, warning residents to evacuate. Water level expected to reach 11.5m later Friday

* The SES is predicting the situation could worsen on Friday with a high tide due at 1pm

RAINFALL

* The Tweed River valley recorded 500-740mm of rainfall in 24hrs to 2am Friday, with 565mm in Couchy Creek

* The Wilsons River valley recorded up to 576mm of rainfall in 36hrs to 4am Friday, with 466mm at Terania Creek

* A severe weather warning remains in place for destructive winds, abnormally high tides and damaging surf in the Northern Rivers and the Mid North Coast, with heavy rain easing as the low moves away from the coast

* Ex-tropical cyclone Debbie is sitting north of Lord Howe Island bringing damaging winds and rain from Friday
