A day with Bob Katter

As candidates for Katter's Australian Party contest seats around the country, SBS reporter Stefan Armbruster joined party leader Bob Katter in Mount Isa on a rare break from the national campaign.

Controversial Queensland MP Bob Katter hopes he won't be sitting alone in Federal Parliament after the election.

Mr Katter is determined to make his fledgling party a political force in Canberra.

"Just give me the power and I'll give you ethanol to fill your motor cars up for 74 cents a litre, as they did in Brazil," he said.

The controversial MP holds the seat of Kennedy, which stretches from the Queensland's east coast all the way to the Northern Territory border, with a margin of more than 18 per cent.

He is considered a shoe-in for re-election but has little warmth for Canberra or for his fellow MPs.

"I don't mean disrespect to any of them but the word admire isn't a word I'd use to describe any of them in Parliament," he said.

Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady said Mr Katter, who is well known for his colourful one-liners and outspoken views, had a knack for generating publicity.

"I think you get a handful of politicians who can strut the national stage and get publicity, and Bob is one of those people," he said.

Following the last election, a hung Parliament made Bob Katter a power broker with a national profile but the forthcoming election will test if a party bearing his name appeals to the wider electorate.
