A man fired a rifle at his former partner and her children in their Queensland home before being fatally shot by police.

Officers were advised of a domestic dispute at a home in Tiaro, south of Maryborough, late on Saturday night.

It was there that a 40-year-old man known to police had been in a dispute with his former partner.

Police say he then shot at the woman, her children and her car.
Further reports were made to police alleging the same man had fired shots at a neighbour.

He fired further shots at another vehicle and police cars.

"When he attempted to get fuel from another person, police responded to that incident," Superintendent Craig Hawkins said.

"We were actively attempting to find this man as of last night."

Specialist police officers who had travelled from Brisbane located the man at a Glenbar Rd house on Sunday morning.

Superintendent Hawkins told reporters the man shot at police from an elevated position when they arrived and charged at them with a weapon.

He was fatally shot in return fire and declared dead at the scene.

It is unclear how many shots he fired, but no one else was injured.

The incident is being investigated internally, under the supervision of the Crime and Corruption Commission.
