A million bottles of Carlton Dry recalled

Melbourne-based brewer Carlton United is recalling 43,000 cases of its low-carb beer after reports of broken glass inside bottles.

Carlton and United Breweries is recalling over a million bottles of Carlton Dry after some customers found broken glass in their beer.

The Melbourne-based brewer is recalling 43,000 cases of its low-carb beer after being contacted by worried drinkers.

It says it became aware of the problem around the weekend and, after establishing that there was what it called a packaging issue, informed Food Standards.

"There may be an issue with one batch of stock as a result of packaging the product. This sort of thing is rare but we take the quality of our beers seriously," the company said in a statement.

Carlton United, which also owns the likes of VB, Fosters, Crown and Cascade, sells about 10 million 24-bottle cases of Carlton Dry every year.

The recall affects one batch made in Yatala, Queensland, in October.

A Carlton spokesperson said the company was recalling the entire batch as a precaution and that the number of affected bottles was far smaller.

Carlton United hopes to have completed an investigation into what happened by Monday.

The beer could have been sold at a wide variety of outlets including Woolworths' Dan Murphys and BWS, and Wesfarmers' First Choice and Liquor Land.

Regulator Food Standards Australia New Zealand said bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels may also have stocked them.

IGA is among the retailers asking consumers to return their bottles for a full refund, while Carlton United said it would also look to recompense customers who it was verified had bought an affected slab.
