Abbott campaigns with old mates

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has been campaigning in Sydney, and dropped in to see some old mates in Manly.

You know Tony Abbott - now meet his best mates.

The opposition leader dabbled in nostalgia on Thursday, heading home to Manly to meet up with wife Margie and touch base with some of his oldest cycling buddies.

They've known Mr Abbott for years and have cycled around the country with him on Pollie Pedal, the charity ride he's championed since 1998.

Forget Julie Bishop or Joe Hockey, this band of blokes could be the next prime minister's personal entourage.

Standing about in cling-fit lycra, it was all backslaps and jokes when the old crew reunited with their often absent mate.

"As you can see, don't they all look young and fit!" Mr Abbott quipped, to huge laughs from those present.

He had abstained from wearing his cycling get-up. He's declared the election campaign a lycra and a budgie smuggler-free zone.

The group had come together to donate $140,000 they'd raised on their most recent cycling shenanigans to the Manly Women's Shelter.

The oldest in the crew - dubbed "The Legends" - have been backing Mr Abbott on the ride for a decade.

"They're fierce riders, they're great patriots, they've been terrific friends and supporters to me," Mr Abbott said.

But what did they think of their cycling buddy potentially becoming the next prime minister of Australia?

"It does seem amazing to us, because we've known him for so long," Anthony Curtin, an old school mate of Mr Abbott's, told AAP.

He was confident Mr Abbott would make a great prime minister but knew it would mean less cycling and even less time with the man himself.

It wasn't just old mates singing Mr Abbott's praises on Thursday.

A woman who did make-up for Mr Abbott and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd before their debate on Wednesday had a few things to say about both leaders.

"Political opinions aside ... from one human being to another ... Mr Abbott, you win hands down," she wrote on Facebook.

He employed a gentle touch at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, speaking with patients before launching the coalition's health policy.

But even though he was donating the cash to the women's shelter later that afternoon, the limelight was well and truly stolen by his wife Margie, the patron of the shelter, who thanked her husband with a big kiss on the cheek.

Mr Abbott then caught the bug, wandering the room pecking women left, right and centre.

The campaign team departed for the airport from where it's expected Mr Abbott will head to northern Australia.
