Abbott comments may upset neighbours

Tony Abbott's comments that Islam needs a reformation may have implications for Australia's relationships with Indonesia, a Liberal senator warns.

A government frontbencher has taken a swipe at "megaphone politics" following recent calls by former prime minister Tony Abbott for Islamic reformation.

Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs Concetta Fierravanti-Wells made the comments in an opinion piece for The Australian, saying it's time for a "reality check" and condemning "simplistic" calls for revolution and reform.

"Megaphone politics not only distracts from this but has implications for our relationships with our neighbours," she said, referring to Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world.
