Prime Minister Tony Abbott is due to cycle alongside hundreds of regular Australians in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Mr Abbott will on Saturday join what he dubs MAMILs (Middle Aged Men In Lycra) in the People's Ride around Geelong, Victoria.

He will use the opportunity to speak to ordinary Australians amid criticism he has lost touch with the public.

"I am regularly in contact with the Australian public and sometimes it is good news they give me, sometimes it is not good news that they give me," he said on Friday.
