Former prime minister Tony Abbott has paid more than $2000 to repair a marble table broken at a farewell party.

Mr Abbott accepted responsibility for the table being smashed on September 14 by revellers at a party held in the wake of him losing the Liberal leadership to Malcolm Turnbull.

A Senate committee heard on Monday the final bill, which Mr Abbott had paid, came to $2027.30.

The base of the table, originally bought for $590 in 1988, has been repaired and a new piece of marble has been ordered for the top.

Liberal senator Cory Bernardi said he had offered to buy the table.

But Department of Parliamentary Services officer Rob Barnes said the table was not for sale and would remain in use at Parliament House.

The committee heard no action was being taken against the cleaners who reported the damage.
