Abbott staffer to plead guilty

Tony Abbott's chief of staff Peta Credlin says she will plead guilty to a drink-driving offence.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's most senior adviser will plead guilty to a drink-driving offence.

Peta Credlin, Mr Abbott's chief of staff, was breathalysed outside her Canberra home while returning from a dinner in May and recorded a low-range reading.

Credlin, wife of Liberal Party Federal Director Brian Loughnane, was not present in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, but her lawyer, Ben Aulich, asked for the case to be adjourned until September 3 and indicated she intended to plead guilty.

He referred to her "high profile" and said she had no previous convictions.

Mr Aulich handed a letter to the Magistrate, but the media were denied access to the document.

A low-range reading in the ACT is between 0.05 to 0.08 grams of alcohol in every 100ml of blood.

Penalties can include fines and licence disqualification.

Mr Abbott said everyone in his office understood it was never right to break the law.

"If you do the wrong thing, you've got to be contrite and take the consequences and that's what my chief of staff is going to do," he told reporters on the Gold Coast.
