Abbott vague on revamped PPL

Prime Minister Tony Abbott won't reveal the details of his new PPL scheme until next year, but Labor says that's not good enough.

Tony Abbott won't spell out the details of his revamped paid parental leave scheme despite opposition pressure to reveal the changes.

The prime minister has announced he will restructure his signature policy over the summer in a bid to win Senate support.

Mr Abbott won't reveal what the new scheme might look like, saying only that paid leave will still be determined by women's wages, and savings will be directed into childcare.

But Labor is calling for the details now, saying it's not good enough to wait until next year.

"What a farce this is," shadow treasurer Chris Bowen told ABC radio.

"This is the prime minister's signature policy that he implemented without reference to his shadow cabinet or his party room at the time."

Mr Abbott said he had listened to community concern in tight fiscal conditions and will take the new policy back to the party room for debate.

He claims the economic outlook appeared more positive when he first brought the policy forward.

"As circumstances change you adjust your position," he told ABC radio.

The revamped scheme is speculated to include a new means test that would exclude women on salaries of more than $150,000 per year.

Mr Abbott refused to confirm if a means test would be implemented.

Labor says the budget update, due later this month, will be a joke if a major multi-billion dollar policy is still up in the air.
