Abbott waiting for thanks over asylum kids

Former prime minister Tony Abbott insists the only way to keep children out of immigration detention is to continue discouraging asylum seeker boats.

Tony Abbott is waiting for thankyou notes from key human rights advocates following the release of all children from mainland immigration detention centres.

The former prime minister is especially keen to hear from Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs and prominent lawyer Julian Burnside who were among the most vocal critics of the his government's tough border protection policies.

"Funnily enough I'm scouring the post every day looking for it, but I don't think it's arrived," Mr Abbott told Alan Jones on radio 2GB on Tuesday.
