Opposition Leader Tony Abbott wants to upgrade Australia's ties with Israel.

Mr Abbott says Australia's relationship with Israel has been strained under the Rudd and Gillard governments, and he'll have more to say about his approach in the coming days.

"I'm a friend of Israel - always have been, always will be," he told reporters on Monday.

"Australia has been a good friend of Israel.

"There's been a bit of wobbling under the current government but I would expect our standard rock-solid friendship with Israel to resume should the coalition win the election."

Mr Abbott is reportedly set to announce a range of new policies relating to Israel and the Middle East.

Citing opposition policy documents, News Corp says a coalition government will seek to ban more terrorist organisations and take a harder line on visits to Australia by extremists.

A coalition government would also take a harder line against the "boycott, divestment and sanctions" campaign against Israel, and introduce easier visas for Israeli citizens, News Corp says.
