The funeral of ABC helicopter pilot Gary Ticehurst, who died in a Lake Eyre crash last week, has been held in Sydney's east.

More than a week after the tragedy, mourners filled a marquee set up on lawn at Rushcutter's Bay.

The song Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum was being played as mourners filed in.

During his 40-year career as a helicopter pilot, Mr Ticehurst had spent many of them with the ABC.

He was credited with playing an integral role in rescue operations during the disastrous 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race in which six sailors were killed.

ABC managing director Mark Scott was among the mourners who gathered for the memorial service, which began at 11.30am (AEST).

Mr Ticehurst was killed along with veteran ABC television reporter Paul Lockyer and cameraman John Bean in the helicopter crash, which occurred in the Cooper Creek area, about 145km north of Marree, in South Australia.
