ABC personality Andy Muirhead has been charged with a child porn offence, the broadcaster's website said on Friday.

A statement on the ABC's website said Muirhead had been charged by federal police, but was yet to face court.

"The Australian Federal Police have charged Andrew Robert Muirhead with downloading or accessing computer images of child pornography," the website said.

A spokeswoman for the AFP said a 34-year-old man from Sandy Bay, in Hobart's south, was charged with one count of using a carriage service to access child pornography on Tuesday.

She said he was granted police bail to appear before Hobart Magistrates Court on August 2.

The ABC's website said Muirhead's management informed the company of the charge on Thursday, and Collectors, the show he hosts, had been taken off air immediately.

"Muirhead has taken unpaid leave," the website said.

"He will not present Collectors on ABC TV nor the breakfast program on ABC Local Radio in Hobart pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.

"The Collectors program on ABC1 will be off air until further notice."
