Liberal senator Eric Abetz says he welcomes the prime minister's "flexibility" on the timing of a national vote on same-sex marriage.

The conservative Tasmanian senator, who opposes the Marriage Act change, said time should be taken to ensure the plebiscite is properly planned and the yes and no campaigns can be fairly put to voters.

"The chances are logistically it will need to sneak out to 2017 ... I welcome the prime minister's flexibilty as to the timetable," Senator Abetz told Sky News on Tuesday.
