A manhunt is underway after a 10-year-old Queensland boy was shot in the shoulder during a violent Boxing Day home invasion.

The boy was wounded when two men, armed with a gun and a bladed weapon believed to be a machete, attempted to enter the home at Browns Plains, south of Brisbane, just before 8pm Tuesday.

Police say the boy's father got into an argument with the two offenders and, without knowing his son was outside, threw a paint can at the pair before the gun fired and the boy was injured.

The boy then fled into the house and hid under his bed, police say, while the father managed to wrestle the gun off the offenders.
He proceeded to strike the two men with the gun, sustaining injuries himself from the bladed weapon before the two men fled.

The boy and the man, 33, were taken to Lady Cilento Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital respectively, and are expected to make a full recovery from their injuries.

Detective Inspector Tod Reid said the incident was very concerning and police were appealing for anyone with information to help them locate the two alleged offenders.

"They've shot a 10-year-old child on Boxing Day. This is an abhorrent crime," Det Insp Reid said.

"We need to catch them and we need your help to do it."

Mr Reid said no motive was apparent for the attack, nor was it clear at this stage if the offenders were known to the family.

Police want anyone with dashcam footage shot between 7pm and 9pm on Tuesday on Browns Plains Road near Waller Road to come forward.
