Abortion reform to dominate Qld parliament

The debate over two private members bills reforming Queensland's abortion laws is set to dominate the parliamentary week.

Abortion law reform is set to dominate proceedings this week in Queensland parliament.

The reforms, introduced by independent Cairns MP Rob Pyne, are contained in two separate bills, and concerns have been raised that if only one is passed it could leave women and their doctors in legal limbo.

Abortion is the only medical procedure in Queensland's criminal code, although it has been amended a number of times since 1899 to allow for limited cases.

The bills are set to be debated on Wednesday, while parliament will resume on Tuesday morning.

The minority Labor government will also this week introduce legislation to change trading hours in Queensland, following a report by former Speaker John Mickel recommending simplifying trading hours, and allowing smaller businesses to open on Sundays.

The LNP opposition will introduce legislation designed to force sugar millers and marketing companies into arbitration if they can't reach an agreement, following a long-running dispute between Wilmar sugar and 1500 Queensland cane growers.
