Australians are pretty damn angry at the failure of the census website, the federal treasurer says.

But Scott Morrison doesn't think the bungling of the national exercise was the federal government's fault because the Australian Bureau of Statistics was running the program.

"The results the other night were completely unsatisfactory, and make us, frankly, pretty angry. Damn angry," he told reporters in Brisbane on Thursday.
