Abuse royal commission enters final stage

The $500 million, four-year royal commission into child sexual abuse in Australian institutions is holding its last public hearing as it enters its final stage.

THE ROYAL COMMISSION INTO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTIONS

* Allegations involving more than 4000 institutions

* First sitting April 2013

* First public hearing September 2013

* 57th and final public hearing this week

* Public hearings in relation to 116 institutions

* More than 1.2 million documents produced to inquiry

* More than 6500 private sessions with survivors

* Nearly 2000 survivors to have private sessions by December

* Sat for 400 days in public

* Heard from more than 1200 witnesses in public hearings

* Delivered findings for 33 case studies; another eight pending

* 44 research reports

* Major reports on working with children checks, redress, civil litigation

* Criminal justice report to be delivered August

* 1950 referrals to police and other authorities

* 37,740 calls and 21,788 letters and emails received

* Final report due December 15, 2017.
