ACCC crackdown on airlines, car companies

The consumer watchdog is threatening to drag dodgy airlines, car companies and telcos through the courts.

Airlines, car companies and telecommunications providers suspected of ripping off customers will be investigated and potentially dragged through the courts in a crackdown by the consumer watchdog.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims says the "guidance phase" is over in trying to pull dodgy businesses into line and it was time for enforcement through court action.

"There comes a time when that's the only way to get the message across. This is becoming a big issue," he told the Daily Telegraph on Thursday, vowing to make an example of automakers and car yards who fail to refund and replace "lemons".
