ACCC won't ask for Tatts-Tabcorp review

The ACCC still thinks the Tabcorp-Tatts merger will lessen competition but says there are no legal grounds on which it can contest the ACT's decision.

The consumer watchdog still doesn't agree with the Australian Competition Tribunal's decision to allow the merger between Tabcorp and Tatts but won't ask for a judicial review.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it still thinks the merger will lessen competition in the gaming sector, but that - unlike the ACT's original decision - there is no error in law to which it can object.

"While the ACCC takes a different view from the Tribunal on the extent of the public benefits and detriments arising from the proposed merger, there is no avenue of appeal that would test the merits of the Tribunal's decision," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said in a statement on Friday.
