Accused ear snipper also eyed tongue

An accused robber tried to cut out a teenager's tongue before cutting the ear lob off a second young victim, a Gold Coast court has been told.

A Gold Coast robber attempted to cut out a teenager's tongue before slicing off the earlobe of another victim with a pair of scissors, a court has heard.

Carl Bloomfield, 18, was on Monday committed to stand trial at Southport Magistrates Court accused of assaulting and robbing two teenagers at Varsity Lakes in February.

During his committal hearing, prosecutor Sergeant Chris Lynch revealed more detail about Bloomfield's alleged crimes.

"He terrified these two boys, firstly trying to cut off the tongue of complainant one before successfully cutting the earlobe of complainant two," Sgt Lynch told the court.

Sgt Lynch also claimed police had discovered photos of the victims and the injured ear on Bloomfield's mobile phone.

Bloomfield's lawyer Mark Williams said his client had told him the photos were taken after the robbery as he attempted to assist the victims.

Mr Williams said the case against his client rested on the victims' descriptions of facial tattoos that matched those sported by Bloomfield.

"The case solely relies on the credibility and reliability of these two complainants," he told the court.

A bail application was refused by Magistrate Ron Kilner when it was revealed Bloomfield was already on parole at the time of the attack, having been convicted of a convenience store robbery in 2012.

Mr Kilner agreed with the prosecution's claims that Bloomfield was a significant risk of breaching any bail conditions due to his history, and the seriousness of the charges prohibited bail.

A trial date will be set by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
