Accused live baiter to face NSW court

A NSW greyhound trainer accused of killing animals as part of a live-baiting regime has been charged with six animal cruelty offences and is due to front court.

A greyhound trainer accused of torturing and killing animals as part of a live-baiting regime will front court on the day the NSW premier is expected to backflip on his controversial ban on greyhound racing.

The 27-year-old was on Monday morning charged with two counts of torturing and beating an animal to death, aggravated animal cruelty and using an animal for training, after images of an alleged animal-cruelty incident were found during an unrelated investigation.

"It will be alleged the charges relate to the live baiting of greyhounds," police said on Monday evening, adding that the trainer had been denied bail ahead of a scheduled appearance at Liverpool Local Court on Tuesday.

Despite his seemingly strong stance against the industry, Premier Mike Baird is on Tuesday expected to cave in to political pressure and back flip on a statewide ban on greyhound racing which he announced in August.

It came after a Special Commission of Inquiry report found up to 68,000 "uncompetitive" greyhounds were slaughtered in the past 12 years and nearly one in five trainers used live animal baits.
