A self-described Sydney Uber driver who is accused of raping a 22-year-old British tourist in his car will face trial next year.

Muhammad Naveed, 40, was arrested in October last year after he went to a BP service station to buy condoms, then pulled over to sexually assault the woman while she slept in the back seat.

At the Downing Centre District Court on Friday, Judge Derek Price set the trial date for January 23.
