Lives and homes are in danger from an out-of-control bushfire in Western Australia's north.

An emergency warning has been issued for the communities of Hamlet Grove, Bungarun, Birdwood Downs and Savannah Heights in the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley.

"You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes," the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warns.

Burning embers are likely to be blown around homes and some roads have been closed, with motorists asked to avoid the area.

The blaze started on 23 October and has burnt about 1,500 hectares.
