ACT senator Katy Gallagher gets Dastyari's leadership job

Katy Gallagher has continued her speedy rise in federal politics by taking on the role of manager of opposition business in the Senate after Sam Dastyari quit in controversial circumstances.

Senator Dastyari left his frontbench position and the Senate manager role on Wednesday after revelations he had asked a Chinese businessman to pay a $1670 bill for him.

Senator Gallagher was the ACT's chief minister until late 2014 when she resigned to take up a seat in the Senate.
