ACT women's advocate vies for Aust award

Women's advocate Virginia Haussegger is the ACT's finalist for the Australian of the Year award to be announced in Canberra on Friday.

With women in politics in the national spotlight, former journalist Virginia Haussegger's work on improving female representation has thrust her into contention for Australian of the Year.

Ms Haussegger was chosen as the ACT's nominee for the national award for her work with the University of Canberra's 50/50 by 2030 Foundation.

The organisation is pushing for men and women to be equally represented in leadership and key decision-making roles at all levels of government and public administration throughout Australia.

After a 25-year career in the media, Ms Haussegger was appointed to the foundation with her work as a leading advocate for women's rights and gender equality.

Joining her at the awards in Canberra on Friday, will be ACT Senior Australian of the Year, paediatrician and child advocate Dr Sue Packer.

Rural women's advocate, 29-year-old Hannah Wandel, is the territory's representative vying for the Young Australian of the Year.

Ms Wandel founded Country to Canberra, an organisation aimed at breaking down gender and geographical barriers to success.

The ACT Local Hero is disability advocate David Williams, founder of the Confident Speakers program.
