ACTU won't decide on HSU until after poll

A decision on the Health Services Union's reaffiliation with the ACTU won't be made until after the federal election.

The ACTU will not decide on whether to allow the Health Services Union to reaffiliate until after the federal election.

The HSU was suspended from the national body in April 2012 following Fair Work Australia inquiries into senior officials' misuse of union member funds.

Former union secretary Craig Thomson, who was suspended from Labor and is contesting the federal election as an independent MP, and president Michael Williamson are facing court over fraud allegations.

The ACTU's national executive met for two days in Melbourne this week but did not receive an application from the HSU to come back into the fold.

The next ACTU national executive meeting is in November.

The HSU was admitted back into the state peak body Unions NSW in June, following an overhaul of its financial rules and anti-corruption measures.

ACTU Secretary David Oliver is understood to have met with HSU national officials earlier this year to discuss the union's future.

Comment is being sought from the HSU.
