Adelaide fire causes $1 million damage

The SA metropolitan fire service says a large fire at a furniture polishing factory in north Adelaide has caused about $1 million damage.

A large fire in north Adelaide has caused one million dolllars' worth of damage to a furniture polishing factory, a shed, a fence, car parts and several semi-trailers.

Shortly after the fire broke out at Wingfield on Saturday afternoon authorities declared the area dangerous and asked people to stay away.

More than 100 firefighters were sent in to battle the blaze, which the metropolitan fire service (MFS) said started in or near an industrial bin.

"The fire quickly spread through surrounding grass to the ... furniture polishing business," and MFS spokeswoman said.

"Flammable liquid stored within the premises caused a number of explosions and saw the fire spread to neighbouring business."

In an adjoining yard some car parts and a fence were burnt but firefighters managed to save the building.

At another nearby enterprise some semi-trailers were damaged but several were saved.

"Firefighters also prevented a vintage motor bike business from being destroyed," the spokeswoman said.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.

No further information was available.
