An Australian Defence Force member is accused of grooming a 14-year-old girl and possessing child pornography.

Police say the 45-year-old man from Townsville was arrested in Sydney on Thursday, after three months of sexually explicit online chat with police who were posing as a 14-year-old girl.

He was arrested by Federal and NSW officers from the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team, who say they found child abuse material on an electronic storage device.

The man will face Sydney's Central Local Court on Friday charged with using a carriage service to procure an under-16 and importing child pornography.
