ADF praised for role in Ramadi recapture

Australian soldiers have been praised for their contribution in recapturing the Iraqi city of Ramadi from Islamic State militants.

The Australian Defence Force has been praised for its "vital" role in retaking the Iraqi city of Ramadi from Islamic State terrorists.

Vice Admiral David Johnston, head of defence joint operations, says the Special Operation Task Group provided remote support to Iraqi forces in an advise and assist capacity.

The group enabled more than 150 air strikes, destroying about 50 IS fighting positions, 16 heavy machine guns and numerous vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, he said in a statement on Thursday.
