As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan comes to a close, the Afghan National Army is marking the end of a period of huge physical and mental challenge.

SBS Chief political correspondent Karen Middleton and cameraman Jeff Kehl have been embedded with Australian and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

They found a group of soldiers following a punishing daily military schedule, with nothing to eat or drink until dark.
