Afghan war displaces 212,439 in 2017: UN

Conflict in Afghanistan has displaced 212,439 people since January, the UN reports.

Ongoing conflict has forced more than 212,000 people to leave their homes in Afghanistan so far in 2017, the UN says.

Some 212,439 people have been displaced since January, according to the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Forced displacement has been reported from 30 of the 34 Afghan provinces, a new UN report says.

Most Afghans were driven out of their homes and villages in the north and northeast, accounting for 41 per cent of the conflict-displaced. The bitter embattled south and southeast accounted for 22 per cent of total displacements.

Last year, 660,000 civilians fled their homes due to the continued war in Afghanistan.

In the beginning of 2017, the UN said it expected to see another 450,000 people displaced as the conflict rages on.
