A surge in attacks by Afghan militants on foreigners in Kabul has led to the resignation of the city's police chief.

General Zahir Zahir has stepped down without explanation but his decison to quit follows two weeks of Taliban attacks in the capital with the majority targeting foreigners.

The Taliban has increased the intensity of its attacks as most of the foreign combat troops prepare to leave the country.

The Executive Director of the Australia Defence Association, Neil James, says the foreign troop withdrawal is a direct assault on the Taliban's propaganda war.

He's told Greg Dyett the violence is likely to get worse and says it's far too early to be making predictions about the long term security situation in Afghanistan.
