AFL backs Saints on McCartin, Roberton

AFL football operations boss Steve Hocking said St Kilda are best-placed to look after Dylan Roberton and Paddy McCartin after their latest health scares.

The AFL will let St Kilda manage Paddy McCartin and Dylan Roberton through their latest on-field health issues, while offering support if needed.

McCartin and Roberton spent Sunday night under observation in hospital following the pre-season game against the Western Bulldogs in Ballarat.

McCartin, who has a history of concussions, suffered another head knock.

Roberton, who missed most of last season because of a heart scare, is also a concern after he reported feeling unsteady at the end of Sunday's game.

He now has an implant in his chest to monitor and correct any heart beat problems.

Lawyer and concussion campaigner Peter Jess wants independent medical experts to monitor head knocks during AFL games.

He warned that McCartin might already have structural damage to his brain.

While Hocking spoke last August about the potential for independent concussion officials at games, on Tuesday he said the Saints are best-placed to look after McCartin.

"We have total confidence in what the club doctor is doing," Hocking said.

"In fairness, they're best to actually assess that, because they know the player better than anyone, versus an external consultant.

"There's no doubt, if they need support in any way, (AFL medical officer) Peter Harcourt is part of that and he's a phone call.

"But does he inject himself into that? No."

Hocking said the league would talk to the Saints about how Roberton is progressing, but likewise would leave it up to the club.

"There's no doubt there will be a conversation around that - I'm interested in that one as far as Roberton goes," Hocking said.

"We'll certainly do whatever is needed as far as that goes.

"But again, he's looked after by them ... we won't impose ourselves on that.

"If required, we will definitely support where we can, but that is St Kilda's to work through."
