West Coast skipper Shannon Hurn says he still doesn't know whether free agent Scott Selwood will be at the club next year.
Selwood is weighing up a move to Geelong, where his brother Joel is captain.
The 25-year-old Eagle appeared destined to become West Coast's next captain after winning the 2012 best and fairest award.
But his form has dramatically dropped since suffering a serious ankle injury early last year, with the issue still plaguing him.
Selwood was named as an emergency for Saturday's grand final loss to Hawthorn, and he'll undergo more scans on his troublesome ankle this week to determine whether a third round of surgery is needed.
Hurn praised Selwood's dedication to the team's cause, and said it was now up to the vice-captain whether he wanted to stay or not.
"Scotty will make that decision in his due time," Hurn said.
"He's been fantastic. He always trains with purpose. He's been a great team man.
"We'd love to have him around. But at the end of the day, it's up to him."
West Coast are favourites to snare the services of Sydney speedster Lewis Jetta, who is keen to link up with the beaten grand finalists.
Sydney are expected to push hard to secure either Scott Lycett or Callum Sinclair as part of an exchange for Jetta.
And Brisbane midfielder Jack Redden has also asked to be traded to the Eagles.
West Coast assistant Don Pyke is the favourite to win the Adelaide head coaching role, and Hurn said the dual premiership winner would be a good fit for the role.
Meanwhile, Hurn has urged his teammates to use the pain of their 46-point grand final loss to Hawthorn as motivation for next season.
The Eagles were brutally outclassed by a hardened Hawthorn outfit, but Hurn is backing his group to bounce back next year.
"There's been no pact. But players deep down inside, they know we want to achieve something as a group," Hurn said.
"The biggest message is just making sure the players keep working hard and keep doing the basics well.
"If we can do that, it will put us in good stead. Because if you just think it's going to happen, sides catch you.
"So you always need to keep improving."
