AFL intervenes over Goodes meme

A meme that showed Adam Goodes alongside a gorilla has been removed from social media after the AFL intervened.

Facebook has removed a racist meme featuring two-time Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes after AFL intervention.

The meme showed a photo of Goodes alongside Harambe, the gorilla that was shot dead earlier this week by zoo staff after a boy fell into his enclosure.

"It was the AFL's view this was appalling to be posted on a social media forum," a league spokesman said.

"We sought for it to be taken down and this was done."

Goodes took time off during his final season last year after several instances where opposition fans booed him.

He received widespread support within the AFL and the controversy sparked a heated national debate about racism.

Goodes retired at the end of last season after a glittering AFL career.

He played 372 games - the most by an indigenous player and a Sydney club record.

The utility played in Sydney's 2005 and `12 premierships and was a four-time All-Australian.

In 2013, he pointed out a young Collingwood fan to MCG security after she called him an ape during a match.

A few days later, Magpies president Eddie McGuire apologised for an on-air gaffe when he suggested Goodes should be used to promote the musical King Kong.

Goodes was named Australian of the Year in 2014 for his AFL career, community work and strong stand against racism.
