Brisbane have accused the AFL of failing to warn them of the cloud hovering over Craig Lambert as part of the Lachie Whitfield drugs saga before they recruited the now-banned player welfare worker.
Lambert has been ousted from the game for 12 months for allowing Greater Western Sydney's Whitfield to stay at his house in an alleged bid to avoid drug testers in 2015.
As a result, Whitfield copped a six-month ban while Lambert's former Giants colleague Graeme Allen will also sit out a year for his involvement.
Allen left Collingwood last week in the wake of the ban after recently joining as football manager and Lambert won't be allowed any role in the game until 2018.
The Lions say they're not happy about the hole in their off-field operations - a situation they believe is no fault of their own.
"My major disappointment is that we are in this situation," Brisbane chairman Bob Sharpless has told News Corp Australia.
"GWS had a level of knowledge, the AFL had a level of knowledge but we didn't.
"At the end of the day, from the checks we did, there was nothing that would have caused us any worries.''
Brisbane is reportedly working to recruit a new player welfare manager to help oversee the struggling club's young list.
The AFL has been contacted for comment.
