The AFL has launched its first multicultural round in an effort to spread the game's reach.

The league wishes to engage with Australia's newest migrant communities, especially from Asia and Africa, and has recruited some big stars to help, from Daw to Brazilian-born Harry O'Brien.

O'Brien says the game gave him a place to retreat to when he was seen as 'different' and that AFL has a huge responsibility to uphold due to its ability to influence young hearts and minds.

Around 11 percent of current players are from an indigenous background- a success the code is hoping to replicate.

Only 9 percent of players were born overseas, or have overseas-born parents.
