Gillon McLachlan believes the AFL is enjoying a really competitive year but says a working group will soon report on ways to help all clubs to remain in contention for longer.
The AFL's chief executive says a working party is examining issues including the bye structure and the next round of CBA negotiations, which involve discussions on list management and player movement rules.
McLachlan stops short of advocating a mid-season trade period.
"There are a couple of issues about what structure the bye looks like," he told reporters on Thursday in Perth.
"That has been an interesting debate and which has been accelerated because last week we had six games of which there were a couple of less-competitive games.

"Then there is another debate which has been stimulated by the review of the CBA as we go forward, and about what are the right rules for our competition to make sure our clubs, not just a year-to-year basis, but at all times, can be as competitive as they can.
"That will come in the next four, six weeks."
McLachlan also welcomed fresh debate on the future of AFL stadiums in Victoria but said it was too early to comment on whether an upgraded Etihad Stadium, or a new venue next to the MCG, were the best options.
"It's really pleasing to see the state government in Victoria announce they are essentially going to take on a review to stadia infrastructure in Victoria," McLachlan said.
"If you are a sports and major events town, you have to have the best infrastructure in the country and internationally, and this project will review what is right for Victoria."
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire had tabled his vision for stadium development in Victoria, he said.
"He and I have been in regular contact over many months about what that looks like," McLachlan said.
"We have put our position that we think the updated Etihad Stadium is the way forward.
"Let's have a look at all of them and see what the state wants, what sport wants, and hopefully come up with a decision that is best for all Victorians."
