Matt Rosa has swapped one coast for another, leaving AFL grand finalists West Coast for expansion side Gold Coast.

The Suns landed the 28-year-old want-away Eagle by offering pick No.31 in this year's draft.

Rosa stunned his club of 11 seasons by telling them he wanted to be traded, despite West Coast's surge up the AFL ladder this season.

While the Eagles initially refused his request, the club's football boss Craig Vozzo said the trade was the best decision given Rosa's views.

"We were surprised and disappointed that Matt decided he wanted to pursue his career elsewhere," he said.

"Selection 31 in the national draft will give us access to a talented youngster and we look forward to continuing to build our list."

Rosa, who was the substitute in the 46-point grand final defeat to Hawthorn, said he "loved his time" with the Eagles.

"I'm rapt to be joining the Gold Coast Suns," the on-baller said.

"After meeting with the club last week, I was really keen to continue my career with the Suns."
