AFL umpiring director Wayne Campbell says Eleni Glouftsis's groundbreaking promotion is purely on merit.
The 23-year-old will become the league's first female field umpire when she takes charge of Sunday's NAB Challenge match between Carlton and Essendon.
Glouftsis said on Tuesday she appreciates the significance of her achievement, but once Sunday's game starts she will be just another umpire doing her job.
