Victoria is set to celebrate the life of AFL great Lou Richards at a state funeral in Melbourne.

Richards died in a Melbourne nursing home last week aged 94 after a long and celebrated career as a footballer and media figure.

His family accepted Premier Daniel Andrews' offer of a public farewell, with a funeral to be held at St Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday at 11am.
