The father of backpacker Britt Lapthorne says he is worried that Australian Federal Police (AFP) agents will not have enough time to examine the unsolved investigation into her death in Croatia.
Two AFP officers have been sent to Dubrovnik to review the case of the 21-year-old who vanished after partying with fellow backpackers on September 18, 2008. Her body was found, in a nearby bay, nearly three weeks later.
AFP officers reportedly have spent a year trying to get the go-ahead from Croatia to review the investigation, and will be given one week to do so.
Dale Lapthorne says the monthly updates he receives from Dubrovnik police have been "rather deflating".
"There's very little substance in the reports," he told ABC Television on Thursday, adding he was cynical about the local police work. Mr Lapthorne has welcomed the AFP decision to review the case.
"We certainly believe that this is an opportunity for them to be able to close the case."
"We just hope the time (to investigate) is extended so that they can do a proper review and not a rush in and out."
