The Royal Commission into the quality and safety of aged care in Australia has officially called for public submissions.

The commission was in part sparked by the appalling treatment of residents at Adelaide's now closed Oakden nursing home.

It will conduct its first public hearings in Adelaide in January.

It recently invited each of Australia's approved aged care providers for details on the services their outlets provide.

In a statement on Monday, the commission said it would take public submissions until at least the middle of 2019.
