Former Australian spinner Fawad Ahmed has put Victoria in a commanding position after helping to skittle the Cricket Australia XI for 153 in their one-day cup clash on Tuesday.

Ahmed fell just short of his best domestic 50-over figures when he took 4-43 at North Sydney Oval.

The legspinner's introduction into the attack prompted a steady collapse of wickets, also snaring opener Arjun Nair (67), the only batsman in the CA XI to aim up.

As the CA XI top order collapsed around him, it looked like Nair would have to post a big score to lend some credibility to their innings.

However he threw his wicket away, clubbing Ahmed to long on and picking out Evan Gulbis, leaving his side reeling at 5-130 in the 30th over.

No other CA XI batsman passed 19 with wickets falling at regular intervals as the youth development side was bowled out in 37.4 overs.

Marcus Stoinis was also outstanding for the Victorians, taking 3-28 from nine overs.

Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell was sharp in the field - taking a fine catch at midwicket to dismiss William Bosisto before running out Brendan Doggett after he slipped at the non-striker's end.

The CA XI is searching for their first win of the season while the Bushrangers are looking to push up into the top three - and finals contention - after one win and one loss from their opening two games.
