Disaster emergency teams are on standby after Typhoon Koppu hit the northern Philippines.

Oxfam Australia chief executive Helen Szoke said rapid assessment teams were ready to deploy to survey the scale of the damage and respond to immediate needs.

"The Philippines has suffered yet another blow," she said in a statement.

Parts of the country are still recovering from the damage wrought by Typhoon Haiyan which hit in 2013 and killed more than 6300 people and displaced four million.

CARE International is also preparing to send teams in if needed.

Acting country director Tess Bayombong said affected provinces were likely to be hit with intense rainfall, flash floods and landslides.

The eye of Koppu struck the remote coastal town of Casiguran, 215km northeast of Manila around 4am (0700 AEDT) on Sunday with gusts of up to 210km/h.
